009 - Tsunami in Action
Conceptual Question
How do powerful natural phenomenon occur and to what extent can scientific and technical innovations mitigate the impact of them?
Approaches to Learning
Communication Skills - Reading, writing and using language to gather and communicate information - Make inferences and draw conclusions.
Key Terminology
There are no new terms of this lesson.
Activity One - Create a Podcast - Soundtrap
You have learnt how to do a number of skills throughout this unit and for this final section , you are going to create a podcast outlining the causes and effects of a tsunami using Soundtrap. Just in case you don't know a podcast is a spoken word digital file that a user can download or stream on a device. As you can only listen to the information what you say needs to be both informative and engaging to the listener. You can choose any tsunami event but if you are struggling I have added a number of resources below to help you.
The goal is to show that a tsunami can be a seismic process that can create powerful changes to the human and physical environments. It will allow you to illustrate how scientific and technological innovations can mitigate further change/disaster. You will be asked to identify and develop a concern for the well-being of human communities and the natural environment (I&S aim). To do this you will create a three-minute podcast about a tsunami. This element of the task is to complete the research and write a script.
Formal Requirement for the Investigation - Criteria B
Write a research question and justify why it is interesting and/or important to study.
Collate all of your research in a Google Doc (a template can be copied below) and share it with your teacher via ManageBac.
The Google Doc also needs to include a plan of your script.
Advice from 2022
Manage your time wisely. Do not leave it until the last minute!
Get as much detail in your research document as possible.
Make sure the information is relevant (read the requirements).
Include data and facts.
Finish the research and script early so you can relax and practice the recording.
Avoid practicing your script in a noisy room or a space with distractions as it wastes time.
Make sure you have time to edit the podcast.
Make two copies of the audio - just in case one fails.

How will I be assessed? - Part one - The Research
You will be assessed using Criterion B - Investigating iii. The reflection aspect, strand iv, will take place after the whole process has been finished.
Activity Two - The Podcast
A reminder - The goal is to show that a tsunami can be a seismic process that can create powerful changes to the human and physical environments.
Formal Requirements for the Podcast - Criteria A and C
Describe where and when the tsunami took place.
Explain the causes of a tsunami event of your choice.
Discuss the impact of the tsunami. The impact can focus on the social, economic, environmental and political problems caused by the event.
Explore what help or support the area received - local and global.
No more than three minutes in length.
Needs to have at least two different voices on it - one being an 'expert' in the field.
Export your podcast as an mp3 - make sure you put your name on the file.
Upload your mp3 to the dropbox on ManageBac.

How will I be assessed? - Part Two - The Podcast
You will be assessed using Criterion A - Knowing and Understanding and C - Communicating.
Activity Three - The Reflection
You are now going to reflect on what you have learnt about the research process; the data you collect, how you recorded it, what could be done better, along with your actual performance of the podcast.
Content
Here are suggested questions to help you to structure your evaluation of the research and performance elements of your podcast.
How useful were the sites that you used to research the tsunami?
What was good about them?
What could have been improved?
How well do you think you recorded the information that you found?
What could be done to improve the way you collated the research?
How successful was your script in giving all the required elements for this project and in informing your 'second voice' of how to play their role?
What went well during the performance element of this podcast?
What skills did you develop during this process and why do you think they are important?
What was the value of doing an assignment such as this?
What advice would you give to next year's Year 9 on how to be successful in this assignment?
