The aim of this 'Big Breakfast' is to explore the origins, production and cultural significance (potentially) of the foods that we eat for breakfast.
Create teams of approximately five and six students.
Each team will need to collect a picnic blanket, plates, cups and three clipboards which will have the worksheets on.
Spread out the picnic blanket in the area that you have been given to sit and place the food each of you have brought with you in the middle.
Mark on to the world map the origin of the food and try to categorise them - fruit, pastry, cereals, etc. Add the categories to your key.
Add to your map the distance that the food has travelled in km. Use Google Earth as it has a measuring tool to help with this process.
Google Earth
Now you have recorded on your map where you breakfast comes from and how far it has travelled, it is time to eat your breakfast. There will be fruit juice and water to wash it all down. Please let your teacher know if you have any food allergies before you ask for a glass of juice.
You now know where your team of five or six breakfast originated from. We are now going to share this with the other groups in your team.
Moving clockwise, pass over one of the clip boards with your team's labelled map.
Record onto your maps the origin of the food for the whole class along with the food miles.
Calculate how many miles your class's breakfast has travelled.
Discuss with your small teams the impact that their choices are potentially having on different places - local, national, regional, global. Record your thoughts on the back of your map.
Now you have explored the potential impact that your food choices have on different settings we are going to create a sustainable and nutritious breakfast.
Collect the worksheet below and create your breakfast. Try to make it as appetising as you can! Include the following:
Food miles - justify why the food is coming from a certain country. You can do this by considering the ecological footprint of the country. Ultimately local may not be better.
Nutritional value of your choices.
Along with writing the breakfast ingredients draw diagrams to make the menu visually appealing.
