IB Geography - "chosen from a limited number of countries"

The IB Geography Guide makes the following recommendation:

It is recommended that as much of the content as possible is taught through appropriate examples and case studies, preferably chosen from a limited number of countries (between three and five) of contrasting levels of development.

I'm not sure about the 'preferably chosen from a limited number of countries (between three and five)' idea.  As geography teachers we teach about the world - not just a small section of it!  Are there textbooks for the IB written with this focus in mind?

However being a balanced person ... I can see the benefits.

Moving students towards being experts on certain geographical areas.  Helping students not to be overwhelmed by too many countries when comes a time for revision.

I am not going to not teach an excellent case study just because it falls outside of 'a limited number of countries' but I am going to try and limit my examples and case studies to being from one of the following eight countries:

There are issues in finding suitable resources for IB Geography due to what is well written and accessible on the internet.  My limited language abilities means that I need to be accessing web pages in English before I start to work them into resources on geographyalltheway.com.

My rationale for the 'IB Eight':

Your Home Nation: helps the level of personal engagement of the students - if their home nations is already one of the eight they get a free choice

Australia: ranks second in terms of the Human Development Index

United States of America: large and diverse country with plenty of English language resources online

United Kingdom: European with plenty of English language resources online

China: the most populous country in the world and centre of manufacturing processes

Morocco: northern African countries are always interesting plus our DP1 fieldtrip goes there

Haiti: with the recent earthquake disaster and much written about the reasons for the country's low level of development and use of resources

Niger: ranks last in terms of the Human Development Index
